Staying Ahead of Summer Chlorine Demand on a Full Route
A pool you left crystal clear on Thursday can go green by Sunday in a heat wave. Here's how to read summer chlorine demand — CYA, bather load, and the heat — and stay ahead of the callback.
You finished the route Thursday, every pool crystal clear, free chlorine right where you like it. Sunday a customer texts a photo: the deep end has gone cloudy-green. It's 101 degrees, the kids had friends over all weekend, and the pool burned through everything you left it. Nothing you did was wrong. The pool just outran you.
That's summer chlorine demand, and in August it's the single thing most likely to turn a clean route into a week of callbacks.
Why the demand spikes in August
Chlorine gets used up faster the hotter and busier a pool gets. Three things stack up at the same time this month:
- UV burn-off. Direct sun destroys unprotected free chlorine fast. On a 100-degree afternoon an unstabilized pool can lose a big chunk of its FC in a single day.
- Bather load. Every swimmer brings sweat, sunscreen, and organics that eat chlorine. A pool that sees two kids on Tuesday and a party of ten on Saturday has a completely different demand curve than the spec sheet says.
- Water temperature. Warm water grows algae and bacteria faster, so the same FC reading does less work at 90 degrees than it did at 78 back in May.
Add a heat wave and you've got a pool that was perfect on your visit and starving by day four.
Read CYA before you blame the chlorine
The fastest fix for summer chlorine demand usually isn't more chlorine — it's the right cyanuric acid level. CYA is sunscreen for your chlorine. Too low and the sun eats your FC by lunch; too high and the chlorine you add barely works.
Aim for the 30–50 ppm range on most residential pools (higher on saltwater systems, per your equipment). If you're pouring chlorine into a pool every week and it never holds, pull a CYA reading before you touch the FC. Half the "high demand" pools I've seen were really just CYA problems wearing a costume.
Dose for the pool in front of you, not the average
The pool that parties every weekend needs a different target than the retired couple's pool nobody swims in. Once you know a pool runs hot on demand, build the buffer in:
- Carry the FC a little higher on known heavy-use pools going into the weekend.
- Lean on stabilized chlorine (or a properly set salt cell output) instead of chasing it with liquid every visit.
- For a repeat offender, a floater or an adjusted feeder between visits beats a green-water trip on your day off.
The point is to stop treating every pool the same. Your route has ten different demand curves, and August is when the differences get expensive.
Get ahead of the heat wave, not behind it
When you see a run of 100-degree days coming, that's your cue — not the customer's callback. Five minutes on Sunday night saves a Saturday rescue:
- Flag your highest-demand and highest-bather-load pools.
- On this week's visit, set FC toward the top of your range on those specific pools.
- Note which ones you'd swing back to or check remotely if the heat holds.
None of this is exotic chemistry. It's just knowing which pools eat chlorine and planning the week around them instead of finding out on Sunday.
Keep the history so the pattern is obvious
Here's the quiet problem: you can hold all ten demand curves in your head in June, but by August — 40 pools, five days, 105 degrees — you're running on memory and guesses. The pool that always goes green is easy to forget until it's green again.
That's where a per-pool history earns its keep. When you can glance at the last four visits' FC and CYA readings and see that this pool always drops fast in a heat wave, you dose for it on purpose instead of reacting to a photo. PoolPro Smart CRM keeps that dosage-and-reading history on every pool so the pattern is in front of you at the pool, not stuck in your head — though honestly, the habit of checking last visit's numbers matters more than the tool you keep them in.
Beat summer chlorine demand the boring way: know your CYA, know your heavy-use pools, and set FC for the heat that's coming — not the heat that already turned the water green.
